For the men and women that make up America’s Reserve Component, readiness is essential. This is because they must be prepared to respond instantly and mobilize when called into active duty. The Reserve Component is required to maintain a year-round high level of military readiness. Not only do they need to be fully trained to deploy, each reservist must remain in good medical and dental health, be physically fit, and receive specific immunizations to protect them against diseases they may encounter in other regions of the world. This is known as Medical Readiness, and making sure that reservists maintain a high level of medical readiness can be challenging.

Federal Occupational Health (FOH) has been doing its part to ensure that America’s reserve forces remain medically ready. FOH has joined with the Veterans Administration (VA) and the Department of Defense (DoD) as partners in the Federal Strategic Health Alliance (FEDS_HEAL). The FEDS_HEAL program is an award winning and innovative alliance that combines the resources of FOH and the VA to create a robust provider network that delivers medical and dental services to Reserve Component members in all 50 states and territories.

As the lead agency for the FEDS_HEAL program, FOH provides for the FEDS_HEAL Program Office (FHPO) through its affiliation with Logistics Health Incorporated. The FHPO coordinates medical examinations, dental examinations and treatment, immunizations, and other medical readiness services though FOH Occupational Health Centers, VA medical centers, and an extensive provider network of over 1,100 physicians and nearly 2,250 dentists nationwide.

The FEDS_HEAL program has been incrementally expanding since it became operational in early 2001. In Calendar Year 2003, the FEDS_HEAL program provided 42,624 dental exams, 44,730 dental treatments, 29,971 physical exams, 54,108 immunizations, and 2,427 vision exams to reserve members. The key feature of this program its accessibility for reserve members. The FEDS_HEAL program pairs each reservist with medical services that are located within a convenient distance from their homes.

This unique endeavor has made unprecedented improvements in the readiness of the Reserve Component; improving its ability to quickly and efficiently respond when called.
