Ergonomics is the science of optimizing the job to the worker. Injuries often occur when there is a mismatch between the worker, work, and the workstation. Ergonomics takes into consideration the interaction between people and their work systems, and looks for ways to optimize performance, and reduce injuries that can be costly for agencies through reduced productivity, lost days from work, and workers’ compensation claims.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are injuries or disorders of the muscles, nerves, tendons, joints and spinal discs. These injuries can occur when workers perform repetitive tasks or maintain certain postures over long periods of time.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a disorder associated with the peripheral nervous system, which includes nerves and ganglia. CTS results when there is a compression of the median nerve at the wrist. Symptoms of CTS include numbness in the hands, tingling, weakness, and eventually muscle atrophy.
Federal Occupational Health’s (FOH) multidisciplinary team of professionals will help you address employee-related MSD and CTS issues. FOH experts in ergonomics, environmental health, employee assistance as well as occupational medicine will work with your agency to address your ergonomic concerns and identify potential workplace injury risk factors. FOH’s experts can help your agency integrate ergonomic factors into workplace safety programs as well as help workers improve work practices that put them at risk for MSDs.
The ergonomic services FOH can provide include:
- Consulting in the selection of ergonomically correct equipment and furniture
- Conducting individual evaluations
- Providing training and education for you and your employees
- Assisting with reasonable accommodation requests and return to work issues
- Recommendations for space planning and appropriate workstation set up
- Providing recommendations for altering tasks that reduce the possibility of injury
- Helping you recognize hazards in your workplace
- Providing recommendations for overall compliance with OSHA guidance including developing written policy, hazard reporting, job hazard analysis, and management procedures
