Safety Training for Federal Supervisors
FOH-EH-SAF-001
Overview:
This course introduces Federal agency collateral duty safety and health personnel to the Occupational Safety and Health Act, Executive Order 12196, 29 CFR 1960, and 29 CFR 1910. Students will learn how to recognize basic safety and health hazards in their workplaces, as well as how to effectively assist agency safety and health officers with inspection and abatement efforts.

Duration:
This training lasts four hours.

Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (Hazwoper) Initial Training
FOH-EH-SAF-002
Overview:
This course is intended for employees who will work on hazardous waste sites. According to OSHA’s Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard, 29 CFR 1910.120, employees must not perform any hazardous waste operations unless they have been trained to the level required by their job function and responsibility. At the conclusion of this course, student will learn:
  • How to recognize common physical and chemical hazards in the workplace, as well as uncontrolled environments, and estimate the associated risk
  • The importance of the site safety plan
  • Ways to reduce the possibility of exposure to hazards on site
  • The importance and use of Personal Protective Equipment, PPE
  • How to use direct reading instruments and interpret results

Duration:
This training lasts forty hours.

Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (Hazwoper) 24 hour training
FOH-EH-SAF-003
Overview:
This course is intended for workers who will perform occasional and limited duties on hazardous waste work sites. According to OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910.120, 24 hour training is required for “workers on site only occasionally for a specific limited tasks (such as, but not limited to, groundwater monitoring, land surveying, or geo-physical surveying) and who are unlikely to be exposed over permissible exposure limits…shall receive a minimum of 24 hours of instruction off the site.”

At the conclusion of this course, students will:

  • Understand how hazardous material are handled and identified.
  • Understand the effects of exposure to hazardous substances
  • Understand the importance of the site safety plan
  • Learn the significance of using appropriate safety methods and work practice controls

Duration:
This training lasts 24 hours.
* An 8 hour annual refresher course is offered to students who have participated in the 40 hour or 24 hour courses.

Permit-Required Confined Space Entry
FOH-EH-SAF-004
Overview:
This course is required training for any employee who will perform work within a permit-required confined space entry. Training content will include:
  • Identification of confined spaces
  • Differences between confined spaces and permit-required confined spaces
  • Provisions of the OSHA Permit-required Confined Space Regulation and (Architect of the Capitol (AOC) Permit-required Confined Space Policy
  • Duties and responsibilities of Authorized Entrant, Attendant, and Supervisor
  • Proper safe work practices and procedures for safe entry into a permit required confined space
  • Air monitoring requirements for entry into a confined space, including hands-on practice
  • Proper documentation of confined space entry: the Confined Space Entry Permit
  • Overview of confined space rescue procedures
  • Hands-on practice in confined space entry and non-entry confined space rescues
This training meets the OSHA Permit-required Confined Space Standard (29 CFR 1910.146) and includes non-entry rescue requirements.

Duration:
This course lasts two days.
* A one-day Confined Space Awareness course is also offered.

Bloodborne Pathogens Initial

Overview:
This course focuses on ways to reduce occupational exposures to blood and Other Potentially Infectious Materials (OPIM) through workplace and engineering controls. Students will also learn the significance of the Exposure Control Plan as well as the importance of the Hepatitis B vaccine.

Duration:
This course lasts three hours.
* A one-hour refresher course is also offered.

Trenching and Excavating Comprehensive

Overview:
Excavation operations are recognized as one of the most hazardous construction operations. Course topics include:
  • Common hazards associated with trenching and shoring
  • The basics of soil mechanics
  • How to determine soil type, using both visual and manual methods
  • Various mechanical methods for trenching and excavating
  • Determining initial site conditions
  • Selecting applicable protective measures

Duration:
This course lasts one day.
* A two-hour Trenching and Excavating Awareness course is also offered.

Manual Materials Handling (Back Safety)

Overview:
This training focuses on one of the most physically challenging responsibilities in the workplace - manual materials handling. Participants will learn:
  • Proper lifting and storage procedures
  • Basic principles of ergonomics
  • To recognize hazards and injuries
  • Procedures for reporting hazardous conditions
  • Methods and procedures for early reporting of injuries

This training lasts two hours.

Slips, Trips, and Falls Safety Training
FOH-EH-SAF-008
Overview:
Slips, trips, and falls constitute 15% of all accidental deaths occurring on the job and are second only to motor vehicles as a cause of fatalities. This module is designed to provide all workers with a better awareness of safe conditions, work practices and procedures to reduce slip, trip and fall hazards. Topics covered include:
  • The OSHA standard for walking and work surfaces
  • Hazards in the workplace
  • Hazard prevention
  • Work site housekeeping and maintenance
  • Proper footwear
  • Proper walking techniques

Duration:
This training lasts two hours.

Fall Protection Initial
FOH-EH-SAF-009
Overview:
Each year, falls consistently account for the greatest number of fatalities in the construction industry, and are always a major concern in other industries. This training is designed to ensure compliance with OSHA’s Fall Protection Standard, 29 CFR 1926.500. It is intended for employees who work on scaffolding, trusses, platforms, or roofs. The training includes the following information:
  • How to erect, maintain, disassemble, and inspect fall protection systems
  • Guardrail systems and personal fall arrest systems
  • How to work on low-sloped roofs

Duration:
This training lasts three hours.
*A one-hour refresher course is also offered.

Lockout/Tagout Comprehensive

Overview:
This training provides instruction in the proper practices and procedures used to power down/shut down equipment, isolate it from its energy source(s), and prevent the release of potentially hazardous energy while maintenance and servicing activities are performed.

This training meets OSHA’s Lockout/Tagout Standard (29 CFR 1910.147).

Duration:
This training lasts three hours.
* A one-hour Lockout/Tagout Awareness course is also offered.

Respiratory Protection
FOH-EH-SAF-011
Overview:
The objective of this training is to provide mandatory training that defines the need for respiratory protection equipment, as well as proper selection, use, and care of employee respiratory protection. Topics include terminology, OSHA standards, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) certification, and medical evaluation requirements. The training meets the requirements set forth in the OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard (1910.134) and may include respirator fit testing, if required.

Duration:
This training lasts three hours.

First Aid/CPR/AED

Overview:
The objective of this training is to certify individuals in standard first aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and Automated External Defibrillators (AED). Topics include:
  • Breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults
  • Identifying and caring for bleeding, sudden illnesses, and injuries
  • Preventing disease transmission
  • How to safely use an AED to provide care for victims of sudden cardiac arrest
Note: The American Red Cross currently certifies this class.

This course is designed for students who need adult CPR training only. This hands-on skills training prepares participants to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults.

Powered Industrial Trucks/Forklifts
FOH-EH-SAF-014
Overview:
This class focuses on the safe operation of powered industrial trucks. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) defines a powered industrial truck as a mobile, power-propelled truck used to carry, push, pull, lift, stack, or tier materials, such as forklifts, pallet trucks, rider trucks, fork-trucks, or lift-trucks. Each year, tens of thousands of preventable forklift-related injuries occur in U.S. workplaces. This course will provide training on safe operation of powered industrial trucks, with special emphasis on loading and unloading, center of gravity, stability, and mechanical limitations.

Duration:
This training lasts six hours.

This course provides general background information on electrical safety for employees who work primarily in non-technical positions. Hazard Communication (HAZCOM)

Overview:
This course focuses on OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200, and is intended for employees who work with or have contact with hazardous chemicals. Information presented includes:
  • Routes of exposure and health effects of hazardous chemicals
  • Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
  • Chemical identification systems
  • Labeling and the importance of a written Hazard Communication program

This training lasts three hours.

Overview:
This course is intended for supervisors who are tasked with investigating accidents. Participants will learn the difference between an accident, a near miss, and an incident. The key points in conducting an accident investigation will be discussed, including timeliness of investigating and conducting post-accident employee interviews.

Spray Painting

Overview:
This training is designed for employees that are engaged in spray painting activities. OSHA Standard 1910.94 "Ventilation" defines a "Spray-finishing operation" as the "employment of methods wherein organic or inorganic materials are utilized in dispersed form for deposit on surfaces to be coated, treated, or cleaned." Spray operations can present both physical and health hazards to those involved. Topics include:
  • The composition of coatings
  • Fire and explosion hazards associated with spraying operations
  • Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)
  • Proper ventilation

  • Radiation safety

Overview:
This course prepares the participant to teach construction topics. Participants will be able to locate OSHA policies, procedures, and correct standards using the 29 CFR 1926 regulations, identify common standards violations and establish appropriate abatement procedures.

The issues surrounding an OSHA inspection (e.g., preparing for an inspection, and penalties associated with noncompliance) will be presented, as well as multi-employer requirements.

This course introduces the participant to management principles required for effective oversight of safety policies in the workplace. Ergonomics-Managing Task Stress

Overview:
This course will familiarize the participant with the concepts and applications of current ergonomic theory. Discussion will focus on work physiology, biomechanics, workstation design, and both engineering and administrative controls. Participants will learn procedures for evaluation and follow-up in tracking the effectiveness of specific ergonomic solutions, as well as determining areas where further attention may be needed.

This course provides an agency’s safety committee with the safety management principles that they need to be effective. Information regarding duties, roles and expectations of the committee is provided, as well as time saving tips and techniques to make the safety committee an integral part of an agency’s safety program.
