Bloodborne Pathogens Services
In the line of duty, law enforcement officers may be exposed to diseases transmitted by blood. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires Federal agencies to protect officers from exposures to bloodborne pathogens (29 CFR 1910.1030). Federal Occupational Health’s (FOH) Law Enforcement Medical Program offers a variety of Bloodborne Pathogens Services to help agencies with law enforcement missions comply with OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standards. These services include:
- Site Specific Exposure Control Plans
FOH consultants can review an agency’s work processes and assist in developing site specific exposure control plans as required by the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard. Exposure control plans outline each agency’s unique plan to control or avoid exposures to bloodborne hazards. FOH helps agencies ensure their plans contain all required elements such as training, proper use of personal protective equipment, guidance for potentially exposed employees, and proper placement of hazardous sharps containers to eliminate potential for needle stick injury.
- Bloodborne Pathogen Training
FOH consultants provide comprehensive training that covers all OSHA requirements. FOH’s Bloodborne Pathogen Training includes discussion of a variety of diseases such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV, aspects of prevention that are specific to law enforcement, information about vaccination, how to care for injury, and immediate post-exposure care.
- Hepatitis B Vaccination Program
FOH provides a comprehensive Hepatitis B Vaccination Program. FOH provides educational materials to each employee that is vaccinated, documents all immunizations provided, and tracks immunizations per individual and per worksite.
- Personal Protective Equipment Recommendations
FOH consultants assess the work processes of each agency to determine the nature of potential exposures. Based on that assessment, FOH provides recommendations to agencies regarding types of eye and face shields, gloves, gowns, masks and other protective equipment that should be used.
