    Recognizing the possibility of bioterrorism is a reality of this post 9/11 world. Anthrax is acknowledged as a potential agent for bioterrorism. This training aims to reduce fear of communicability of anthrax in the workplace by explaining how the disease is transmitted, the three types of anthrax, symptoms, and treatment).

    Automated External Defibrillator – An Agency Briefing

    Overview:
    In the U.S. every 90 seconds, sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) claims another victim. SCA survival rates increase dramatically when there is early access to a defibrillator, a device which delivers a brief, high-energy shock through paddles or electrode patches applied to chest. This training program provides participants with an understanding of:
    • SCA and the use of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to prevent death
    • The most current AED regulations
    • Requirements for implementing a successful AED program
    • Legal liabilities in having an AED program in the workplace
    • FOH program management

    Bloodborne Pathogens, Universal Precautions in Prevention

    Overview:
    This training program focuses on Universal Precautions as a method of protection against bloodborne pathogens. Participants will learn about Universal Precautions and how they protect against diseases that are transmitted in blood. Other topics reviewed include:
    • Transmission
    • General practices concerning how to avoid exposure to blood
    • Blood components
    • Universal or standard precautions including basic barrier protection devices

    Colorectal Cancer Screening

    Overview:
    Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. This training program focuses on colorectal cancer, the anatomy involved with the disease process, and risk factors for colorectal cancer. Participants will learn about the current screening protocols for colorectal cancer and underutilization of these protocols. An overview of services available from FOH to assist with screening for the disease will also be provided.

    Depression: What It Is, and What You Can Do About It

    Overview:
    According to the National Institutes of Mental Health (2003), annually, 9.5 percent of the population, or about 18.8 million American adults, suffer from a depressive illness. This program provides an overview of depression and how to recognize its signs and symptoms, as well as how to distinguish depression from normal mood swings. The training also discusses risk factors and treatment options for depression.

    Diabetes – Are You at Risk?

    Overview:
    There are 17 million Americans with diabetes and another 16 million with pre-diabetes, a condition that will likely lead to the development of diabetes within a decade unless changes in diet and level of physical activity are made. This program aims to define the scope of the current worldwide diabetes epidemic and provides statistics for disease status in the United States. The link between the rapidly increasing obesity statistics and soaring diabetes cases in the United States will be explored. Topics include:
    • Different types of diabetes
    • Dangers of diabetes
    • Diabetes screening
    • Detection methods
    • Prevention of diabetes
    • Types of treatment for diabetes

    Exercise and Your Health

    Overview:
    Advances in technology and the type of work most people do have dramatically reduced activity levels. This is a major factor in obesity trends and the increase in type 2 diabetes. This program provides an overview of the connection between exercise and physical health. The presentation will cover different types of exercise, the benefits of those exercises, and how to plan a personal exercise routine. The primary message is that Americans need to consciously build exercise into their lives.

    Hypertension: How It Measures Up

    Overview:
    High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and the number one risk factor for stroke, heart failure, and damage to kidneys. This training program provides a review of the upward trend in hypertension statistics in recent years. The training also provides a definition of pre-hypertension and hypertension , the damage it causes to the body, guidelines for classifying hypertension, detection, risk factors, prevention, and treatment.

    Indoor Air Quality: Factors Affecting Health

    Overview:
    Indoor Air Quality problems can be caused by ventilation system deficiencies, overcrowding, microbiological contamination, and outside air pollutants. Typical symptoms may include headaches, unusual fatigue, itching or burning eyes, skin irritation, nasal congestion, dry or irritated throats, and nausea. This training presents the most common identifiable causes and health effects of poor indoor air quality and presents an overview of Indoor Air Quality in office settings.

    Infectious Agents in an Era of Bioterrorism

    Overview:
    Bioterrorism is the intentional use of infectious agents (germs) to cause illness or even death. This training provides an overview of some infectious agents that may be of interest because of their potential control by vaccines, and their potential threat if used as biological weapons. In this presentation, participants will learn about key organisms that may pose a risk to national security, whether there are protective mechanisms such as vaccines to prevent disease or antibiotics to treat disease. Finally, the resources for agency planning for bioterrorism response are provided.

    Lyme Disease: A Disease and Vaccination Overview

    Overview:
    In 1977, Lyme Disease was named when arthritis was observed in a cluster of children in and around Lyme, Connecticut. The disease is caused by bacterium that is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected deer ticks. Each year, Lyme Disease causes more than 16,000 infections in the United States and can be considered an occupational hazard for some employees. This training will provide participants with an overview of Lyme Disease, including seasonality of the disease as well as geographic distribution within the US. Participants will also learn the signs and symptoms of disease, treatment, and prevention strategies for avoiding infection.

    Overview:
    Learning to become aware of stress and its effect on our lives is important in order to reduce its harmful effects. Long term, unrelieved stress can be a source of wear and tear on our bodies. It can affect the immune system and cardiovascular system. Participants will learn techniques to recognize and manage stress in their lives. Participants will learn how to:
    • Become aware of stressors and emotional and physical reactions
    • Reduce the intensity of emotional reactions to stress
    • Moderate the physical reactions to stress
    • Build physical reserves
    • Maintain emotional reserves

    Medical surveillance is a preventive strategy for protecting the health of employees who may be exposed to occupational illness, injury, or hazards. This training will provide participants with a brief overview of Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s requirements for worker protection, key definitions, and essential elements of a medical surveillance program. Participants will learn how medical surveillance programs help to prevent injuries and illnesses for Federal workers.

    Overview:
    Good nutrition plays a key role in health and well being. This training provides a broad overview of nutrition issues with a primary focus on the effects of changes in the American diet, eating habits, and activity levels, over the past 50 years. The program will describe how these changes contribute to our current epidemic of overweight Americans. Topics include:
    • Dieting
    • Micronutrients
    • Food safety
    • Importance of balance in diet
    • Food allergy/intolerance
    • Eating disorders
    • Cultural aspects of nutrition

    Pesticide Exposure Medical Surveillance

    Overview:
    Exposure to certain pesticides may lead to serious illness. Because of their effects on the nervous system, organophosphate and carbamate pesticides can cause serious harm if they are not handled properly. This training program explains how these pesticides affect the nervous system, methods used to evaluate exposure, and practical advice on what to do if exposure has occurred. This training program is tailored to safety officers or managers who may supervise employees who work with pesticides.

    Rabies: A Disease and Vaccination Overview

    Overview:
    Rabies is a preventable viral disease of mammals most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal. This training program provides a brief overview of rabies and the prevention of the rabies virus infection Participants will learn what rabies is, who is at risk, how it is treated, and how it can be prevented.

    Skin Cancer Awareness and Prevention

    Overview:
    Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight is the chief cause of skin cancer. This training presents an overview of the various types of skin cancer, and provides photos of common skin cancers and skin cancer precursors. Participants will learn about risk factors for skin cancer, cancer screening, and cancer treatment. The primary focus of this training is on risk prevention, avoiding excessive sun exposure, and the specifics methods that can be used to avoid such exposure.

    Smoking, How to Quit

    Overview:
    Tobacco use remains the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, causing more than 440,000 deaths each year and resulting in an annual cost of more than $75 billion in direct medical costs. This training program is intended for persons who smoke, or non-smokers who want to gain an understanding of current smoking cessation issues and techniques. The program takes a look at physical and psychological obstacles to quitting smoking. It provides guidelines for how to go about planning a quit effort. Finally, participants will receive an overview of smoking cessation resources available through FOH.

    Smoking Cessation – An Agency Briefing

    Overview:
    One of the most effective health promotion efforts a Federal agency can sponsor is a smoking cessation program. This training program is designed for agency representatives who may wish to develop and implement smoking cessation programs within their own agencies. Participants will learn about:
    • The nature of nicotine addiction and the latest and most effective techniques for quitting
    • Nicotine Replacement Therapy
    • The benefits of smoking cessation support groups which are effective tools in preventing relapse
    • The benefits of one-on-one coaching from health and wellness professionals who help create “quit” plans and provide encouragement as employees become “smoke free”
    • Employee Assistance Program services to help with employees with problems such as stress, substance abuse, depression, and difficult relationships that get in the way of long-term success at quitting

    Stress: An Overview

    Overview:
    Stress is personal—everyone reacts differently to it. The effect that stress has on your health will depend on how you respond to it. Stress can disrupt concentration, sleeping, eating habits, and one’s ability to fight illness. And it could lead to depression. This program provides a definition of stress and the health effects of stress, if it is not well managed. The presentation provides a series of interactive tools to assist participants in identifying, quantifying, and managing the stress in their lives. Finally the role of FOH in identifying and assisting with stress coping skills are discussed.

    Tuberculosis Threat

    Overview:
    In 1993, the World Health Organization declared Tuberculosis (TB) a global emergency. Approximately 8 million new cases and 2-3 million TB deaths occur each year around the world. This program provides an overview of the causal factors in the resurgence of TB, viewing the disease in a worldwide context. TB statistics will be presented as well as prevention, detection, and treatment issues. Participants will also learn more about FOH’s role in the efforts to screen for the disease.
